The mafic rocks along the North Tabriz Fault, possible remnants of Neo-Tethys oceanic crust in NW Iran
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
The North Tabriz Fault is seismologically an active fault with current right lateral strike-slip movements. Restricted mafic to intermediate Late Cretaceous igneous rocks are exposed along the North Tabriz Fault. Whole rock samples and clinopyroxene phenocrysts geochemistry were studied in order to characterize the petrogenesis of these mafic rocks and their possible relation to an oceanic crust. The results indicate a tholeiitic parental magma that formed in an evolved mid- ocean ridge tectonic setting similar to the Iceland mid-Atlantic ridge basalts. The ocean floor basalt characteristics give evidence of an oceanic crust along the North Tabriz Fault. Therefore, the trend of the North Tabriz Fault more likely marks a suture zone related to the closure of a branch of the Neo-Tethys Ocean in the NW Iran. This fault, in addition to the Caucasus and Zagros suture zones, compensates an important part of the convergence between the Arabian and Eurasian plates resulting from the Red Sea divergence. It is concluded that the North Tabriz Fault appears to be possible southeastern continuation of the North Anatolian suture zone.

Detection of fault segments based on P–T dihedra analysis along the North Tabriz fault, NW Iran
Detection of fault segments is an essential step for tracking main transverse faults. General observations from field studies as well as attitude measurements can give an overall understanding of the lengths of the segments, but these are not always sufficient to accurately identify and characterize them. In this study, we analyze P–T dihedra variations based on their eigenvalues to detect faul...
متن کاملOceanic mafic magmatism in the Siletz terrane, NW North America: Fragments of an Eocene oceanic plateau?
Article history: Received 11 October 2016 Accepted 5 January 2017 Available online 14 January 2017 The Siletz terrane, a predominantly mafic accreted oceanic terrane, is located in the Cascadia forearc region of Oregon, Washington and Vancouver Island. The terrane represents a late Palaeocene–Eocene large igneous province that consists of pillow lavas, massive flows and intrusive sheets. Previo...
متن کاملPetrological and geodynamical constraints of Chaldoran basaltic rocks, NW of Iran: evidence from geochemical characteristics
Chaldoran area in NW of Iran has Mesozoic oceanic crust basement. The studied rocks of this region can be divided into three groups: ophiolitic gabbros and pillow lavas, ophiolitic volcanoclastics and Eocene lava flows. Ophiolitic mafic rocks show continental volcanic arc natures and Eocene lava flow shows OIB-like nature. During the Mesozoic, the Chaldoran region was situated in the active cont...

Composition of the Kiyamaki dome has mostly dacite and granodiorite in rims, with SiO2 contents ranging from 64 to 73 wt% and Mg# values ranging from 27 to 57. These rocks are high-Si adakite. Geochemical characteristics and Sr and Nd isotopic rates indicate that the rocks of Kiyamaki dome are a post-collisional adakite. Combined geochemical and Sr–Nd isotope data suggest that the Kiyamaki adak...

the kasian volcanic body is located in the eastern margin of the zagros thrust belt, close to the sanandaj-sirjan metamorphic zone. these volcanic rocks are mainly composed of andesite and andesite-basalt rocks with porphyritic, hypocrystalline porphyritic, hyalo-porphyritic and hyalo-microlitic porphyritic textures. analyses of the distributions of major, rare earth and trace elements reveal a...
